The aim of this paper is to make a sociological effort about the emergence of the term militia in the press and to point out the exaggeration of its use as a defining category of armed groups in Rio de Janeiro. As there are different militia groups and armed groups, we will focus on the so-called Justice League in order to better debate the issue. In order to carry out this work, we used surveys of major regional newspapers, interviews with old and new residents of neighborhoods where there is a marked and historical presence of the armed militia group. What is the origin of the term and how has it evolved over time and space? How did the so-called Justice League begin its formation?
