In this paper, we seek to analyze how the presence of immigrants has been understood through different conceptions of assimilation, multiculturalism, and interculturalism. The study was motivated by how these conceptions have evolved over the last 100 years. We observed that the differences among assimilation, multiculturalism, and interculturalism result from general aspects, such as the emergence of globalization, and the specific contexts of different regions and countries. Furthermore, although these conceptions have differences, none are definitive and univocal.
